In the summer of 2014, the Ukrainian Army was advancing on territory controlled by Russian-separatist forces in east Ukraine, driving a wedge between the so-called “rebels” and their personnel and ammunition source – the Russian border. Then Russia launched artillery strikes on Ukrainian positions near the border and proceeded with a full-blown invasion, which ultimately led to today’s situation of two proxy Russian “republics” and a frozen conflict in eastern Ukraine.
