Andy Hunder: London’s rich Ukrainians can influence events at home
In modern Ukraine, politics comes at a high price. A decade ago, presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko ate a poisoned supper that nearly killed him and has left him scarred for life. One of the intended beneficiaries of that poisoning is current President Viktor Yanukovych, who, over the past two months, has driven his country to mass riots through his misgovernment. Repressive legislation has now been passed turning Ukraine, one of the biggest countries on the European continent, into an effective dictatorship. George Orwell’s dystopian vision of the future as “a boot stamping on a human face — for ever” has been realised, in video footage of a protester stripped naked by riot police having an officer stand on his face while the rest of the unit take pictures on their mobile phones.
