30 years after independence, Ukraine’s economy is mostly raw-materials oriented, with agriculture and metals making up the bulk of exports – a ratio resembling that of colonial countries. But a new generation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are ushering changes into this ratio, having found ways to make Ukraine excel in a number of hi-tech and added value exports. These hidden champions are exporting e-bikes, drones, jewelry, emotions, and more, eroding the grip of oligarchs on the raw-material-dominated economy.
