Six years of Russia’s war against Ukraine have decimated Donbas, and the end to it is nowhere in sight. Despite Russia’s best efforts to make its puppet “Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics” financially self-sustainable, they are fully dependent on Russian funding to stay afloat. If Ukraine were to regain sovereignty over its belligerent eastern region, it would be faced with the price of restoring the region. And the price tag is too heavy for Ukraine to bear alone.
