On August 3, 1775, Catherine II of Russia issued the manifesto “On the liquidation of Zaporizhian Sich and annexation thereof to the Novorossiya Governate”. The Zaporizhian Sich was razed to the ground. Some Zaporozhian Cossacks were able to flee and travel to the Danube Delta, where they formed a new Danube Sich, as a protectorate of the Ottoman Empire.
