The leader of the powerful Investigative Committee, Aleksandr Bastrykin, claimed in 2016 that the USSR collapsed because of “foreign intervention”: “The destruction of the ideological fundament of the USSR, the principle of the brotherhood of nations, was instigated from abroad.”
