Nothing better illustrates the shrinking space for civil society under President Vladimir Putin than the offensive by the authorities against Memorial, Russia's most distinguished human rights group. The supreme court is due to hold a hearing on Nov. 13 into the justice ministry's request to shut down the group, which was founded in 1989 by Andrei Sakharov and others for freedom in the late Soviet era.
