Kyiv native invents a Skype competitor with translation
capacity

A 35-year-old
native of Kyiv, Oleksandr Kivalov, invented a voice over internet protocol telephone
application, the Droid Translator, which improves on Skype and Viber by
automatically translating voice and text messages into 14 popular languages. In
just two weeks the application was downloaded around 10,000 times. By late
summer, the Kyivan plans to release a Droid Translator version for iOS, the
operating system used by Apple products.

The Netherlands keeps
investing in Ukraine’s agriculture

The Netherlands
keeps cooperating with Ukraine in various agriculture sectors such as
horticulture, raising livestock and biomass. At a recent meeting of the
Ukrainian-Dutch working group on agriculture the sides signed veterinary
certification to export semen of bulls-sires from the Netherlands to Ukraine
and agreed to cooperate on attracting foreign investment and technical assistance
in the above-mentioned sectors, learning from the Dutch farm development
experience and organizing trade missions, seminars and special exhibitions in
Ukraine.

Ukraine opens first lab that diagnose tuberculosis
genetically

Ukraine’s first lab
providing genetic diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) opened in the Kharkiv regional
TB dispensary No. 1. The sophisticated equipment makes it possible to identify
tuberculosis agents and their resistance to all anti-TB drugs, and prescribe
the right treatment course within one day.

The lab, named Hain
Lifescience, is opened within the framework of the Kharkiv local government “Stop
TB in Ukraine” project supported by Rinat Akhmetov’s development foundation. In
2012, regional TB establishments received modern medical equipment for clinical
diagnostic laboratories worth Hr 4.5 million ($550,000).

World’s strongest student
lives in Lviv

A student from the Lviv University of the State Service for Emergency
Situations, Serhiy Karpa, won the world bodybuilding championship. The young
man competed in the junior category (under 23 years). The competition took
place the Italian city of Sapri and gathered athletes from Italy, Austria,
Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.

Now Serhiy is preparing for the European Championship, to be held on July
26-28 in Kyiv.

One million people
to attend the Christianization of Kyivan Rus anniversary in Kyiv  

Up to one million people are going to visit the
capital of Ukraine to witness celebrations dedicated to the 1025th
anniversary of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus. The celebrations began on
July 20 with the opening of a thematic flower exhibition at Spivoche Pole and a
Christian music and song fest attended by representatives of different faiths.
The following week, on July 27-28, a solemn prayer, concerts and a show
featuring the history of the Ukrainian people and Kyiv itself will be
organized.
