Lev Ponomaryov has been jailed for 25 days for reposting a message about a protest in support of young political prisoners whom Russia is claiming were members of ‘extremist groups’. This is a dangerous new escalation in repression in Russia and comes soon after the 77-year-old veteran human rights defender and head of the ‘For Human Rights’ NGO warned of systematic attempts to destroy his organization for its defense of the young people arrested in the notorious ‘Novoye velichiye’ and ‘Set’ [or ‘Network’] cases.
