Belarus has reached a political impasse. Following the rigged August 9 presidential election and unprecedented violence against peaceful protesters, Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country for the past 26 years, has lost legitimacy in the eyes of the public and the West. He continues, however, to retain power through a high degree of repression and the loyalty of his security services.
