European conservatives are taking a beating. As Politico pointed out recently, the westernmost European capital where they still hold power is Ljubljana, Slovenia, and their electoral prospects are dim in the European Union’s biggest member states. In France, for example, the Republican candidate, Xavier Bertrand, is polling even worse ahead of next year’s presidential election than Francois Fillon did at this point five years ago.
