On August 9, Belarus held a presidential election that was marred by fraud. According to the official results, Alexander Lukashenko won with 80 percent, although the EU and United States do not recognize the results. Fearing for the safety of her children, the likely winner, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, fled to Lithuania. Tsikhanouskaya ran for president flanked by Maria Kalesnikava and Veranika Tsapkala.
