Michael Yurkovich: Nord Stream 2 could be Ukraine’s silver lining. Canada can help

Nord Stream 2 doubles the capacity of the existing line, enabling Russia to send 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas directly to Germany. The project bypasses Ukraine, whose natural gas pipeline network has historically transported most Russian gas to the rest of Europe.

Western analysts lament the finale of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline saga. No doubt, the all-but-finished natural-gas infrastructure cements German energy dependence on Russia. It will also undoubtedly be weaponized against Europe by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Notwithstanding the European Union’s hypocrisy (about the environment, democratic values, and principles of solidarity and resolve), there is a silver lining.
