While markets have focused on the escalating UK-Russia stand-off over the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Russia’s Gazprom is engaged in what is being called a “new gas war” with neighbouring Ukraine.

The Russian natural gas giant — 49 percent owned by largely international shareholders — is trying to cancel a 2009 contract with Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state gas company, after a Stockholm tribunal found largely in Kyiv’s favour in a multibillion-dollar arbitration case.
