Oil Voice: Ukraine to adopt the European model of a diversified energy supply system
The winter gas crises of 2006 and 2008 have taught Europe a hard lesson. For decades Europe had comfortably relied on Russian gas as the mainstay of their energy policy. The former Soviet government had seen gas supplies to Europe as major generator of hard currency and a potential soft economic weapon that could be implied more than used. It was an effective solution for both sides.
