Serhii Plokhy: Ukraine sings to a tune of new national pride
Activists in the Crimean Tatar movement gathered on May 18 at the railway station in Bakhchisaray, ancient capital of Crimea, defying a ban by the Russian authorities on demonstrations in honour of victims of the forced deportation of Crimean Tatars 72 years ago. The participants then marched to the Bakhchisaray palace, former seat of the rulers of the Crimea, accompanied by the sound of "1944", Ukraine’s winning entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.
