This year, a glimmer of hope appeared for the victims of the decade-old Syrian civil war, who have zero chances of justice in their homeland. For the first time, a court outside Syria convicted a representative of the Syrian regime of aiding and abetting a crime against humanity. A 44-year old member of the Syrian secret police named as Eyad A. stood accused of escorting 30 protesters to imminent torture and was convicted to 4.5 years in prison. Prosecutors, in their final pleas, described killing and torture in Syria on an “almost industrial scale.”
