Odesa Oblast to preserve
biodiversity of Danube delta
The World Wild
Fund for Nature included the Danube Delta into the list of 200 most precious
verge of extinction eco regions of the world. More than 6000 kinds of flora and
fauna and 30 types of natural systems are a part of biodiversity of the Danube
Delta. All this is threatened to be destroyed by floods and drought.
The essential part of the delta is located in Romania;
other part belongs to Odesa Oblast (the Danube Biosphere Preserve, where more
than 20 plants from Red Book of Ukraine grow, more than 125 kinds of animals
included).
One of the effective means of adaptation is the Danube
Delta reed beds renovation, which were mostly destroyed during the last 50
years. The reed beds is a natural buffer system enabling to adjust to the
changes and facilitate extreme weather conditions influences. They help water
purification of river systems, increase soil fertility in coastlands, make
favorable conditions for valuable industrial fish cultivation and help to
control Danube level changing.
