The Eurovision viewership backed Russia so as not to upset the Russians. As a singer, Lazarev was not bad, though.

Rumor has it that the European Union and the United States wanted to finance Ukraine to have it win the contest, probably in order to promote Ukraine, or probably to spite Russia. Who knows what the truth is? But we see that Russia and Ukraine also gave high votes to each other.
Yaroslav Tovkailo, student
Lazarev openly expressed his position on the annexation of Crimea. He must have been really brave. It is logical that many liked him for that. Besides, his performance, with its visual effects, was quite good. But I don’t think anyone would have backed us if Jamala had performed badly.
Yevhen Kulpynov, sales representative
Yeah, Europe firmly supported Ukraine. Furthermore, Jamala is a top-level singer. She got the result that she deserves.
Halyna Sytnychenko, pensioner
Of course I believe that other countries are with us. However, there are lots of fans of Russia. I think it’s because few people abroad know what’s really going on in Ukraine.
