Editor’s note: There is a lot of speculation about whether President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who will be sworn in on May 20, will dissolve the parliament, which will see the end of its termthis fall. We asked people in Kyiv whether they wanted the parliament dissolved.

Ihor Yaroshenko

technician

“I think it is necessary to dissolve the parliament, because today, the level of trust in it is almost zero. Actually, it should have been dissolved a long time ago.”

Volodymyr Kholodiuk

chef

“I think he should not dissolve the parliament, because the parliament is doing a useful job. He should just make some cleansing there and involve more professional people, young and professional.”

Anna Sarkissian

babysitter

“I think that the parliament should be dissolved, because it does not fulfill its functions. It does not function the way it is supposed to function. They do not make decisions that would really help our country get its feet back on the ground. For 28 years, we have been drifting away instead of making progress. Something has to be changed. If the old faces remain, it will not be possible to change anything. We need fresh blood in the parliament, people who are able to promote a real action plan, as life is getting more difficult day by day.”

Olga Derevets

retiree

“I reckon that this parliament has already done whatever it was capable of doing. Anyway, it is more efficient to dissolve it, because all the headquarters are also ready. The sooner it happens, the better. I think the parliament’s work is not efficient, and the tribune would be used as a means of personal PR.”

Natalia İvanova

housewife

“I think yes, the parliament should be dissolved. There must be some progress. We cannot be stuck in the same place.”

Sergey Pali

employee at the Taras Shevchenko University

“First of all, he does not have legal power to dissolve the parliament, because he has not taken office yet. Secondly, the head of the People’s Front fraction has declared that he is leaving the coalition. Accordingly, there is no coalition in the parliament. It means that MPs are given 30 days to form a coalition, and in 30 days, it will be impossible to dissolve the parliament, because there is less than half a year till the parliamentary elections. Therefore, talking about dissolving the parliament does not make any sense.”
