The programme of the 17 th festival includes Cannes award winners, top choices for British prizes, and festival hits. We offer Ukrainian viewers the most notable and acclaimed films from the United Kingdom with the support of Arthouse Traffic distribution company.

Traditionally now UK’s cinema collects awards at one of the world’s top film festivals – Cannes. The Killing of a Sacred Deer by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Dogtooth) featuring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman will be the opening film of the 17 th British film fest. This psychological thriller was awarded Best Screenplay by the Cannes jury.

Another winner of this forum is You Were Never Really Here by Lynn Ramsay (We Need to Talk about Kevin). Director and writer shared the Best Screenplay prize with Lanthimos, while lead actor Joaquin Phoenix got the Best Actor award.

Cult-favourite Trainspotting by Danny Boyle, based on the novel by Irvine Welsh has finally got its continuation – in T2: Trainspotting the director returns to the story of Renton and his friends, using Welsh’s book sequel Porno. So viewers can meet their favourite characters Sick Boy, Spud and others again in cinemas.

One of the leaders among this year’s top-awarded films is God’s Own Country by debut filmmaker Francis Lee, a story of a young farmer burdened with his work who hires a Romanian immigrant – and falls for him. Nomination for the Teddy award at Berlinale, Directing Award at the Sundance festival, Best British Film at the festival in Edinburgh are among the many honours of this film, compared with the great Brokeback Mountain.

The Final Portrait is directed by well-known Hollywood actor Stanley Tucci and tells a story of one of the greatest 20 th century artists – Alberto Giacometti, featuring Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush and rising star Armie Hammer.

Finally, for the admirers of short stories we present our special project with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, a collection of short films nominated for BAFTAs in 2017, BAFTA Shorts 2017.

Screenings will take place in the Kyiv Cinema on December 13-20. Following the festival in Kyiv, activists and film club leaders can hold their own retrospective screenings of the New British Film Festival programmes in their towns and cities as part of the Arthouse Club project. Applications should be submitted on club.arthousetraffic.com.

The festival will also include a training of film clubs organisers, to take place in Kyiv December 12-15: activists from Ukrainian film clubs are welcome to apply. The programme includes lectures, workshops, panels with representatives of the British Council in Ukraine, cultural institutions and the country’s biggest film festivals.
