Ukrainian Alternative Energy Forum ’16 was held on November 3, 2016 in Kyiv. The first international forum focused on investment opportunities in Ukrainian alternative energy market. Forum organizers – A7 CONFERENCES and Dentons, Institutional Partner – EBRD, PartnersGESS Consulting Ukraine, RENTECHNO, Jinko Solar, CNBM, Renault Ukraine, Turkish Airlines and KNESS.

Alternative energy is one of the most promising areas, which is constantly drawing the attention of more market players. Energy efficiency and energy independence issues have become very topical in Ukraine during the past years. The increased cost of energy imported, the instability of the national currency and the direction for energy efficiency are currently the main factors that require important decision making.

During this year it was the third international conference of the organizers, dedicated to the Ukrainian energy sector, that became the largest communication platform with a focus on investment opportunities, development and reforms of the alternative energy sector, including solar energy, wind power and bioenergy.

The platform brought together more than 400 representatives of the sector, including investors, government officials and financial institutions from more than 20 countries. A special feature of the Forum was a discussion on global trends in alternative energy, prospects of its development in Ukraine until 2020 and the potential of solar, wind and bioenergy.

Myron Rabij, Partner, Ukrainian Head of Energy and Natural Resources practice, Dentons, noted that “Dentons is proud to be a co-organizer of this important industry event. Green energy has long been a conference topic at Ukrainian energy conferences and this event demonstrates its enormous potential and the extent of market interest.  Ukraine is part of that global dialogue that focuses on energy diversity, clean energy and new technologies. Our Forum became an effective platform for honest and productive dialogue and exchanges of experience.

Deputy General Director of “CNBM in Ukraine”, Tian Wei, said: “In the field of renewable energy there is a great opportunity, but it cannot be developed if there will be no investments. CNBM assets in solar energy is a good example that shows that, unfortunately, there are precedents of selective attitude towards investors and unstable legislative framework in Ukraine. The result is a non-compliance with the guarantees given to investors. But, in spite of the temporary difficulties, Chinese business believes in Ukraine and its successful economic development. CNBM is the owner of  ten solar power stations in Ukraine, with total capacity of 267 MW and has repeatedly stated its intention to invest in the Ukrainian energetic and other spheres”.

Olga Brizhan, Director, GESS Consulting Ukraine, commented: “This year the Forum has once again reaffirmed that the future of alternative energy in Ukraine is not a myth, but a reality today. It was nice to see the leading companies of the energy sector of Ukraine and foreign colleagues among the partners and participants of the Forum, who shared their experience and demonstrated their willingness to cooperate in favor of energy security and independence of Ukraine. Our company, in turn, would like to thank for the organization of the event at a high level. We hope that Forum drew the attention of the society and the government to the need of creating a stable political and economic environment, as well as the development of more favorable conditions for attracting foreign investments in order to develop the alternative energy sector in Ukraine. We expect that the Ukrainian government, which plays a crucial role in the future of the energy sector, will demonstrate its willingness to act decisively, and soon we will see a corresponding positive changes both in terms of the projects financing by foreign investors, and in the energy industry as a whole”.
