You're reading: Facebook usage in Ukraine insufficient to impact on political situation in country

Internet Association of Ukraine Board Chairman Oleksandr Fediyenko has said targeting content in social media is not that critical for Ukraine’s political life because the use social media platforms is still at a low level.

“Yes, some percentage of people receiving targeted information may change their mind. But Facebook coverage in Ukraine is not sufficient to impact on main moods in the country. These platforms will be used for information support, and to support television platforms,” he said.

Fediyenko said Ukraine’s active electorate is not widely president on social media platforms because most voters are 50 years old and older. He said citizens only up to 35 percent of persons between the ages of 55 to 64 are active users of the Internet.

“Most active Internet electorate users 20 years and older, and they practically don’t vote. Maybe there is a segment of the electorate 30 plus years old that could become a target audience for such machinations, but it’s too small to have much of an impact,” Fediyenko said, adding that 93 percent of Internet users are between the ages of 15 and 29.
