You're reading: Kyiv International Economic Forum begins with familiar refrain: ‘Ukraine needs investment’

On Oct. 18 and 19, the Kyiv International Economic Forum, or KIEF, rounds ups several events that focused on business and foreign direct investment for Ukraine.

“The Kyiv International Economic Forum here in Ukraine has made big steps in its development in recent years,” said Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, speaking as he opened the forum on Oct. 18. “The economy is now showing stable growth. But in order to develop at maximum speed, Ukraine needs investment.”

Ukraine attracted barely $1 billion in foreign direct investment, while the economy as measured by gross domestic product, only generated slightly more than $100 billion in 2017, hardly enough for 42 million Ukrainians to live prosperously.

Last week, Ukraine went to the United Kingdom and held a series of Ukrainian Week events from Oct. 8-Oct. 14 that aimed to pitch the opportunities of the Ukrainian marketplace to London-based investors. Then, on Oct. 14-15, the Horasis China Meeting in Kyiv, attracted more than 100 Chinese businesspeople and at least that many Ukrainians.

This week, KIEF organizers are trying to bring the world to Ukraine so they can see the challenges and opportunities themselves. Over two days, KIEF is bringing together hundreds of business executives, lawmakers and other influential people from Ukraine and abroad at the Parkovy Convention and Exhibition Center.

KIEF’s organizers say that the forum, now in its fifth year, is Ukraine’s leading international platform for analyzing and debating the Ukrainian and global economic outlook.

Experts from around the world are putting Ukraine under the microscope, looking at business and entrepreneurship trends, challenges and opportunities. Dozens of multinational corporations from around the world have sponsored the event and partnered with organizers.

Through Oct. 13 to Oct. 19, Kyiv Investment Week organizers held a series of events that aimed to bring entrepreneurs, investors and other business executives together in the Ukrainian capital. More than 3,000 people attended nine different events in Kyiv through the week.
