You're reading: Lifecell sees no chance to track COVID-19 spread using operators’ data

The mobile communications operator lifecell has denied a possibility of tracking the spread of the coronavirus disease COVID-19 among the Ukrainian population with the help of data from mobile communications operators over the fact that their databases are impersonal, the press service of the operator has told Interfax-Ukraine.

“It is impossible to track the spread of the virus among the population through the data of mobile operators. It is worth recalling that in Ukraine more than 90% of the subscriber base is impersonal,” the company said.

At the same time, lifecell said that more than a week ago, at the request of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the National Commission for Communications and Informatization Regulation (NCCR), the operator sent SMS messages to all subscribers who returned from abroad.

“This initiative, as far as we know, was supported by all mobile communications operators. The authorities provided the text of an information message and determined the list of countries in order to send newsletters to those subscribers who were roaming in these countries and returned from them,” the company said.

Earlier, Kyivstar proposed to provide the Ministry of Digital Transformation with non-personalized data which could be useful for detecting potential hot spots of the coronavirus disease COVID-19 spread.
