Weakening of the hryvnia in the past weeks is linked to traditional seasonal factors, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Oleh Churiy told reporters in Kyiv on Nov. 30.

“We have a floating exchange rate. Volatility of the hryvnia has increased, as there is a seasonal factor,” he said.

Churiy pointed out purchase of energy and shopping of seasonal goods for New Year. He said that today Naftogaz Ukrainy is not among the buyers of foreign currency. The company sells it.

He said that there are no grounds for alarm, as in general, this year Ukraine manages to boost exports.
Churiy said that the payment of Hr 9 billion of VAT refunds last week affected the hryvnia. He said that the NBU continues working with the Finance Ministry smooth the effect of these payments and prevent peak payments of budget funds accumulated on the account of the State Treasury (around Hr 50 billion) at the end of this year.
