Responsible consumption and recycling have become one of the most prominent trends in 2019, with businesses implementing sustainability strategies and individuals changing patterns of their day-to-day behaviour to reduce waste and become more eco-friendly.
Europe and the U.S. have much more experience and a wider range of options available on the market, and in Ukraine, eco-awareness and green development remain emerging trends.
In Poland, for example, a vast majority of buildings are BREEAM or LEED certified, but it is rare for Ukrainian real estate projects to implement eco-friendliness and energy-efficiency. Engineering and technological solutions like LED indoor and outdoor lighting, VRV ventilation systems with recuperation, seal switches systems on windows, efficient water supplies, bike parking with fully equipped shower rooms or green relax zones are common abroad and still rare in Ukraine.
As a BREEAM-certified business centre (BREEAM Final Certificate 2018 and BREEAM Interim-Design Stage 2016), we understand the importance of waste management. A certain number of credits are given for the effective management and reduction of construction waste by BREEAM evaluators, like clearing a site for new development and drawing up waste management strategies for your company or organization. The most important question is the minimization of waste throughout a project cycle.
Managing waste effectively can contribute to the overall resource efficiency of a building and therefore improve its environmental footprint.
In three blocks (buildings) of Astarta Organic Business Centre, we have more than 40 tenants – large companies and holdings known worldwide as well as local companies – and for the majority of them waste sorting in their offices is a common practice, along with the use of recycled paper, minimized plastic use, e-document flow etc.
This year, we have addressed waste management at the business centre. Garbage sorting and disposal are carried out by Obukhovgorvtorresursy. Each block has boxes installed for collection and recycling of used batteries and plastic lids. As far as the collection, transportation, storing and further recycling and disposal of hazardous waste products, our property and facility management company have decided to outsource these operations.
In 2020, Astarta Organic Business Centre will launch its own waste sorting station within the Astarta Business Quarter, and we are already working on new projects.
