The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine has announced its readiness to join the 2012 Cape Town Agreement on the safety of fishing vessels, the ministry said on the website.

The corresponding statement was voiced by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Yuriy Lavreniuk during the ministerial conference of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

According to him, the Ukrainian side is ready to develop bilateral cooperation to ensure the effective application of the provisions of international agreements and to strengthen safety on vessels flying the state flag of Ukraine, in particular on fishing vessels.

“I want to express the readiness of the Ukrainian side to join the 201 Cape Town Agreement,” Lavreniuk said.

The deputy minister of infrastructure also noted that Ukraine fully supports IMO in setting global standards for the safety of life, ships, cargo, and the environment.

“Ukraine is proud to have joined all the major IMO conventions that have made shipping safer. We will continue to fulfill our obligations under these documents to achieve common goals,” Lavreniuk said.
