MINSK – Ilya Salei, lawyer for one of the leaders of the Belarusian opposition, Maria Kolesnikova, has been placed in custody, Gleb Germanchuk, spokesman for the campaign headquarters of unregistered Belarusian presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, told Interfax.

“The investigators have decided to select custody as a measure of restraint. Before, he was simply detained for 72 hours and now, the measure of restraint in the form of custody has been formalized under due procedure,” Germanchuk said on Sept. 11.

Investigators must bring charges against Salei within 10 days of his detention, he said.

“In other words, they have to articulate charges until September 19. The same thing is with Maxim Znak and Maria Kolesnikova,” Germanchuk said.
