You're reading: Georgian Ambassador tells about circumstances, grounds for Saakashvili detention

Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar received copies of credentials from newly appointed Ambassador of Georgia to Ukraine Giorgi Zakarashvili on Oct. 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said.

“Giorgi Zakarashvili assured of his readiness to make best efforts for the active development of bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Georgia, informed about the circumstances and grounds for the detention of Saakashvili [head of the executive committee of the National Reforms Council of Ukraine, former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili] in Georgia,” the MFA said in a statement on its website on Oct. 5.

According to the statement, Bodnar raised the issue of the detention of Saakashvili in Georgia and noted the need for full observance of his legal rights and interests. “The Deputy Minister thanked the Georgian side for granting permission for the Ukrainian consul to visit Mikheil Saakashvili on Oct. 4 to provide him with consular and legal assistance,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The interlocutors discussed topical issues of relations between Ukraine and Georgia, regional security. They reaffirmed the need to strengthen interaction to counter common challenges.
