TBILISI – It is important that NATO pursue a deterrence policy in response to Russia’s actions, Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria said.

“The main thing in these deterrence policies is maximum strengthening of the defense potential of the NATO countries and its partner countries by strengthening the composition of their armed forces, equipping them with modern weapons and conducting permanent trainings,” Izoria told reporters on Wednesday.

“We have begun the construction of a new military training center on the territory of the Vaziani base with assistance from the United States,” he said.

Nine battalions of the Georgian army will begin training under U.S. instructors in March 2018, the minister said. The training will take place in the new training center for three years.

“Our troops until now have trained to participate in international missions, but from March 2018 these trainings will be focused on protecting our territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Izoria said.
