BERLIN – The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) will send its conclusion on the certification of Nord Stream 2 to the European Commission, agency spokesman Fiete Wulff told Interfax.

“Once the opinion is issued, it will be sent to the European Commission. The European Commission has two months to review, it can ask for an extension for another two months,” Wulff said.

The agency is currently reviewing the documents submitted by the pipeline operator submitted on Sept. 8. The agency is required by regulations to make a decision within four months, in this case by Jan. 8, 2022.

Once the response from the European Commission is received, the Federal Network Agency has two more months to respond.

The agency reviews the documents for certification of the pipeline and its compliance with the EU Gas Directive. It is up to other agencies to decide whether the pipeline can be put into operation.
