You're reading: Human rights activists report detentions of 19 protesters in Minsk

The police detained 19 protesters at opposition demonstrations in Minsk on Jan. 10, according to the Viasna human rights center unregistered in Belarus and volunteers.

The list drawn up by human rights activists was based on information from volunteers, who are monitoring detentions of protesters. “At least four people were detained on Leonid Beda Street at night,” Viasna said.

According to volunteers, nearly every person detained on Jan. 10 and taken to police stations was transferred to the Okrestina detention center.

Belarus has seen continuous protests against the official results of the Aug. 9, 2020, presidential election. The authorities declared the incumbent head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, the winner. Lukashenko has been in office since 1994. The opposition has not recognized the results of the presidential election, saying they were rigged. The protesters are demanding Lukashenko’s resignation, the release of political prisoners, and a new election.
