MINSK – Belarus needs another nuclear power plant in order to become independent of hydrocarbons, the country’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, said.

The BelTA state news agency quoted Lukashenko making this statement during the opening of a third metro line in Minsk on Nov. 6.

He spoke about the fact that the first NPP in Belarus had already been connected to the country’s unified power grid.

“Electricity will be abundant. Our protesters are complaining that we have nowhere to use it. How come? We need to build another plant to get away from hydrocarbon dependence,” Lukashenko said.

He said the NPP’s commissioning “is a blessing.”

Lukashenko additionally instructed for Minsk’s public transport to be gradually converted to electric vehicles.

“Minsk should gradually switch from vehicles powered by internal combustion engines to electric transport. This will be good to people’s health,” BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying.
