Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the import of all types of animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and marine life from Armenia.

The watchdog said that the ban came into force on June 14.

The ban has been introduced to protect against the importation of diseases harmful to both people and animals, a statement said.

The ban does not apply to dogs, cats, ferrets or minks, or to “up to two head of” parrots and canaries, brought in by their owner.

Rosselkhoznadzor press secretary Yulia Melano said the ban “is a genuine protection measure, since live animals of unknown origin are brought in through Armenia with document formality violations,” creating risks of dangerous infectious diseases. “More often than not diseases are brought in precisely with exotic animals,” she said.
