You're reading: Russia registers highest number of new COVID-19 cases since early January

MOSCOW – Russia has registered 25,766 new cases of COVID-19 and 726 deaths in the past 24 hours, the coronavirus response headquarters said on July 9.

“Over the past day, 25,766 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in 85 regions of Russia, including 3,341 asymptomatic cases identified proactively (13.0%),” the headquarters said.

The number of new coronavirus infections reported on July 9 corresponds to the morbidity levels of early January, when, however, the coronavirus curve was on the decline, and now, growth is being reported on practically a daily basis. Daily morbidity is 948 cases more on July 9 than on July 8.

There have been 726 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, with most of them in St. Petersburg (107), Moscow (101), and the Irkutsk region (29).

As many as 21,832 patients have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery.

According to the headquarters, Moscow has reported 6,643 new cases of COVID-19 and 7,231 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

Following Moscow, coronavirus morbidity levels have been the highest in the Moscow region (2,545) and St. Petersburg (1,951).

Since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia on March 2, 2020, it has registered a total of 5,733,218 cases of COVID-19, including 141,501 deaths and 5,165,087 recoveries.

Russian consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on July 9 that Russia has performed more than 154.1 million COVID-19 diagnostic tests to date, including 561,000 over the past day. As many as 1,047,231 people remain under medical observation.
