TBILISI – The Georgian opposition movement United National Movement is going to stage a manifestation to demand the release of its informal leader, ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi on Oct. 1, as well as early parliamentary elections.
“There is going to be a very big rally in the capital of Georgia in the coming period,” Levan Khabeishvili, a member of the United National Movement-Strength in Unity parliamentary faction, told journalists on Oct. 5 after visiting Saakashvili in jail in the town of Rustavi.
The rally will be organized nationwide, he said. “The main demand: the release of Misha Saakashvili and early elections,” Khabeishvili said.
Saakashvili, who is now a Ukrainian citizen, was arrested in Tbilisi on Oct. 1. He is detained in a jail in Rustavi. In Georgia, he is the subject of several criminal investigations.
