VILNIUS – Belarus’ former presidential candidate and opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has announced plans to stage an international rally of solidarity with fellow citizens this Saturday, May 29.

“We announced May 29, the date of Sergei Tsikhanousky detention, as a day of solidarity,” Tikhanovskaya said at a press conference in Vilnius on May 27. On that day various countries across the world are expected to stage a “Global Picket of Solidarity” involving local politicians and Belarusian diasporas, she said.

She is expecting people living in Belarus to support each other on the day “in every possible way: street actions, symbols, letters to political prisoners.”

In 2020, Tikhanovskaya’s husband Sergei put forward his presidential nomination but the Central Election Commission refused to register him as a candidate. Then, his wife successfully applied for her candidate registration. Sergei Tikhanovsky led her support group. On May 29, 2020, Tikhanovsky was arrested by police in Grodno and later charged with criminal offenses.
