As citizens of both Poland and the European Union, members of the Ukrainian Historical Society in Poland call on the nations and leaders of Member States of the European Union to support Ukraine’s efforts to accede to the European Union.
Ukraine is defending itself against violent aggression by the Russian Federation which is determined to destroy not just the Ukrainian state, but also the values cherished by free European societies. Ukrainians are giving their lives for their dignity, their right to be free, their right to live in a democratic state, their sovereignty and independence, and their right to self-determination. By shedding their blood, they demonstrate how dear they hold the values of united Europe. They already proved that during the Orange Revolution of 2004 and during the Revolution of Dignity of 2013–2014, and they are proving it once again on the battlefields in their ancestral lands. We have no right to deny them the right to join the free nations of the European Union. We must show that our values are not just empty clichés, but rather foundations upon which the nations of Europe are built. Today, Ukraine is stopping the evil that could soon reach the European Union’s frontiers.
We sincerely thank those countries and societies that have already lent their support to Ukrainian aspirations to European Union membership, and call on those who are still hesitant or skeptical to change their attitude. We appeal to all institutions of the European Union to open the process for Ukraine’s accession to the European community.
With their fortitude, the Ukrainians have earned their place in Europe and their admission to the European Union will be an act of historical justice.
