A cult figure of Soviet rock, Viktor Tsoi seems never to have been forgotten by his modern-day fans.
Many of them are too young to remember the musician, who died in a car crash 20 years ago. His music comes to life every summer in the city of Odesa during an annual acoustic festival called “Summer will end” (which also happens to be a line from his songs).
The festival will run for the seventh time this year on Aug. 29. A total of 10 rock bands from Odesa, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Donetsk, St. Petersburg and Moscow will gather to pay tribute to the rock star by singing their own and Tsoi’s legendary Kino songs.
Having started as small gatherings of Tsoi fans in small flats, the festival is now one of the main rock events in Odesa.
Tsoi, a Korean by origin, died at the age of 27 on Aug. 15, 1990 in a car crash in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. In the early 1980s, this young and promising guitarist quickly made Kino one of the Soviet Union’s most popular rock bands.
He was a major star of the underground rock movement. His songs are very simple and often more than a little depressive – a feature that makes them popular with teenagers.
Art club ‘Vyhod’ (Bunina Street, 24, Odesa), August 29 from 8 p.m. till midnight.
