The Balailaika is a traditional Russian instrument with a triangular body and only three strings, with the two lowest ones tuned to the same pitch.
The common belief is that it works only for playing easy tunes, but 43-year-old Aleksei Arkhipovsky is living proof that this isn’t the case.
Arguably one of the best balalaika players in the world, he performed during the opening ceremony of the Eurovision 2009 song contest in Moscow and cruised around the world with his concerts.
He doesn’t limit his style to only folk music and actively plays jazz or even pop music – for example, the Mission Impossible theme tune.
