The legendary Broadway musical “Cabaret” will turn on Kyiv audiences with a tumultuous story of romance set in Nazi Germany.
Adapted from the book “The Berlin Stories” and the play “I Am a Camera”, the musical was staged on Broadway in 1966.
It is set in pre-war Berlin when the Nazis were gaining clout. The “Cabaret” revolves around the Kit Kat Klub and its sumptuous nightlife. Sally Bowles, a 19-year-old cabaret performer dating American writer Cliff Bradshaw is at the heart of the story. A sub-plot describes a doomed romance between a German boarding house owner and her elderly Jewish suitor.
The vicious character of Emcee overseeing the establishment provides a metaphor for the threatening state of things in Germany. The musical has instantly become a hit on Broadway inspiring the 1972 film with Liza Minelly and Joel Grey. Minnelli rose to international stardom for her appearance as Bowles – a role that brought her the Oscar for Best Actress.
“Cabaret” will be staged by the Russian theater company Musical Trade in Kyiv. Famous Russian actors Natalia Gromushkina, Svetlana Svetikova, Anastasiya Stotskaya, Aleksandr Maralkulin, Sergey Li and Igor Balalayev will grace the stage. All of them previously played in popular Russian musicals “Chicago,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Nord Ost,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Metro” and “Cats” among others.
