‘Birds of Prey’

Based on the iconic DC Comics, the new movie “Birds of Prey” is far from being a conventional superhero blockbuster. The eighth movie in the DC Universe, “Birds of Prey” is a follow-up to “Suicide Squad” released in 2016. It follows legendary Harley Quinn after she splits up with Joker, another DC villain. Quinn, together with other female superheroes including Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya form a group called the Birds of Prey, aims to destroy a criminal empire in Gotham. The film stars Australian Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, U.S. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Scottish actor Ewan McGregor as criminal and villain Black Mask. “Birds of Prey” was directed, written, and produced by women, while Robbie served as one of the producers of the film. The picture will be screened in Kyiv’s Zhovten cinema in English.

‘Voices of Love’

The notorious art project by the iconic Ukrainian transavantgarde artist Arsen Savadov will finally premiere at the M17 Contemporary Art Center to provoke and challenge the mind. “Voices of Love” is the final stage of Savadov’s performance where two actors impersonating Marylin Monroe visited and made a show for Ukrainian soldiers in military bases in Popasna and near Debaltseve, the frontlines of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The absurdist act is the reenactment of Monroe’s show for the U.S. military in North Korea in 1954 given to elevate their morale. In Savadov’s version, Russian-born opera singer Maria Maksakova and Ukrainian male singer El Kravchuk played Monroe, giving additional absurdist travesty feel to the show. The project came second in the national competition for the 2019 Venice Art Biennale, leading Savadov to badmouth the winners. The exhibition at M17 will include the film about the reenactment show and retrospective photos from Savadov’s other famous projects.
