Algiers

The U.S. post-punk band Algiers from Atlanta, Georgia, will perform in Kyiv for the first time. Highly rated by music-focused magazines such as Rolling Stone, Clash and Pitchfork, the band plays experimental rock and post-punk. The band’s name, Algiers, refers to the anti-colonial struggle of Algeria – the Algerian war of Independence with France, which took place in 1954-1962. Their name influences their songs lyrics: the band sings about protest, equality and fighting for independence. In Kyiv, Algiers will present their second album “The Underside Of Power.”

‘Green Book’

The Golden Globes winning comedy-drama biopic “Green Book,” will be screened in its original English version in Kyiv. “Green Book” is named after The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guidebook for African-American travelers, which was published annually in the United States in the times of segregation. The guidebook provided the addresses of motels and restaurants that accepted African-Americans. Based on real events and set in the 1960s, the new movie depicts a road trip by African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and his driver Tony Vallelonga. The movie stars Oscar-winning U.S. actor Mahershala Ali and Oscar-nominated Danish-U.S. actor Viggo Mortensen.
