Street hockey and Canadian retailers week on Khreshchatyk

Some 12 teams, including ones formed by Canadian expatriates, the Invictus Games Foundation, patrol police, Kyiv Hockey School, the Canadian military and the Canadian police, will play street hockey on Khreshchatyk Street on June 25 as part of the celebration for the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the 25th anniversary of the Canadian-Ukrainian diplomatic relations.

The street hockey rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Between games, anyone from the audience will be able to grab a stick, shoot a puck and score a goal. The games will be refereed by officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – minus their horses, of course.

Guests will also have an opportunity to visit a sugar shack – a Canadian cabin where maple syrup is traditionally produced. There won’t be time to see the production process in full, but visitors will be able to try maple syrup, as well as ice cream and other foods and drinks.

Also, at 1 p.m., Canadian diplomats including Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Roman Waschuk, will take part in the opening ceremony of the Canadian retailers’ week in the TsUM shopping mall. Visitors will find Canadian clothing, books, and more on TsUM’s 6th floor.

Alfa Jazz Festival

Every year since 2011, this international outdoor jazz festival has brought world class jazz musicians to Lviv in June. Concerts will be held on three different stages in the city’s downtown area, with over 40,000 spectators expected to attend the shows. This year the organizers decided to outdo themselves again, and have invited stars like Gregory Porter, China Moses and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Seats for performances on the stage dedicated to Eddie Rosner are sold out, but entrance to the park where the stage will be set up is free, so visitors can still listen to performances while standing. Apart from that, jazz fans can enjoy music for free at the two other stages — on Rynok Square and Potocki Palace Square.
