Atlas Weekend

The biggest music festival in Ukraine is about to kick off in Kyiv. This year, Atlas Weekend will feature top performers of various genres, including the legendary electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers, Dj Martin Garrix, alternative rock band Placebo, and pop singers Tom Odell and LP. The first day of the festival, July 3, is free of charge, and its lineup includes popular Ukrainian musicians – Tayanna, Skai, Yuko, Mariya Chaikovska and others. The six-day event will take place at the large National Expocenter of Ukraine providing a camping, parking and all the other necessary amenities.

Ways of Friendship (music and poetry)

The U.S. actor, director and producer John Malkovich will read poetry in Kyiv as a part of a music performance on July 1. The show, created by Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, will combine academic music and poetry. The combined Italian-Ukrainian symphony orchestra and a choir that all together number over 300 participants will perform music by Giuseppe Verdi, and Malkovich will read the classical orchestral work of the U.S. composer Aaron Copland “Lincoln Portrait.” There are tickets available for seats. Attendees can enjoy the concert standing on the sides of the audience zone for free.

“The Con Is On” 

Following the premiere of “Ocean’s 8” another heist-comedy will hit Kyiv screens. “The Con is On” features a story of a British couple attempting to avoid a debt and fleeing to the United States in order to make a jewel theft. Directed by the U.S. filmmaker James Oakley, the movie stars Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Alice Eve, Sofía Vergara, Maggie Q and others. The screenings are in English.

Rebirth of the Glossy Magazine (exhibition) 

The new exhibition taking place at Kyiv’s America House is a nightmare for a publisher – it features collages that made of nothing but torn pages from glossy magazines. The artist Alexandra Gavrilyk uses publications for her art works, as she finds it a good alternative way to reuse paper. Her collages explore various issues such as self-identification of humans, their relationships with nature, urban environments, and society. The exhibition opens on July 5. Don’t forget to bring an ID to visit America House.

Celebration of Ivana Kupala 

Ivana Kupala is a traditional Ukrainian pagan holiday widely celebrated on the July 6-7. Traditionally, people celebrated Ivana Kupala on the day of the Summer Solstice (June 21), with a special entertainment program including jumping over a fire, folk songs, weaving flower wreaths and fortune telling. The inaccuracy of the Julian calendar means this holiday is now celebrated on July 6. Join the festivities at one of Kyiv’s venues. Pyrohiv outdoor Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine.
