‘Motherless Brooklyn’

This week’s neo-noir premiere, “Motherless Brooklyn,” comes at the perfect time to match Kyiv’s grey and cold fall days. A creation of U.S. award-winning actor Edward Norton, who wrote, directed and produced the film, the picture is an adaptation of the 1999 novel of the same name by American writer Jonathan Lethem. Set in 1950s New York, “Motherless Brooklyn” follows Lionel Essrog (played by Norton), a lonesome private detective with Tourette syndrome, which gives him motor and vocal tics. As the detective tries to puzzle out the murder of his mentor and friend Frank Minna (Bruce Willis), he discovers a mystery involving some of the most powerful people in the city. The R-rated crime film also stars Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe. It will be screened in Kyiv cinema Zhovten in English.

‘Jesus Is King’

Kanye West, the rapper that needs no introduction, is making headlines again. After a number of delays, the artist finally released his long-awaited album “Jesus Is King.” Heavily influenced by Christianity and gospel music, the album reflects on the rapper’s recent lifestyle and beliefs. In 2019, West began regularly holding Sunday Service, church-inspired gatherings with performances from West’s gospel-rap group and a steady stream of celebrity guests. In a 15-year career, the rapper has gone from regularly calling himself God (“Jesus Walks,” “I am a God,” etc.) to dedicating an entire album to Jesus, with numerous references to the gospels. To accompany his new album release, West produced a short concert film capturing one of his Sunday Services, held this summer at the picturesque Roden Crater in Painted Desert, Arizona. The 38-minute concert film will be screened in English.

“Jesus is King.” Planeta Kino Blockbuster (34 Stepana Bandery Ave.) Planeta Kino River Mall (12 Dniprovska Embankment). Nov. 8-10. 7 p.m. Hr 150

Laurent Garnier, Vova KLK, Roman K

The French, electronic dance music pioneer Laurent Garnier will finally perform in Ukraine at Kyiv’s trendy Closer club. Garnier began his career organizing house parties in France and started DJ-ing in earnest in Manchester in the late 1980s, experiencing the city’s acid-house movement and befriending the Detroit-based founders of techno. In the following decade, he went on to shake up Parisian nightlife and traveled across the globe, performing at parties and raves at all the key clubs and festivals. His music ranges from deep house to techno, trance and acid-house and even includes jazz. Garnier is also a producer, label owner, radio host and writer, having authored a book about electronic music. Ukrainian DJs Vova KLK and Roman K, who will support Garnier’s act at Closer, have probably read it through and through.
