‘Sonia Delaunay: Color Rhythm’

The first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in Paris was Ukrainian-born French creator Sarah Elievna Stern, known as Sonia Delaunay. Originally from the southern Ukrainian city Odesa, Delaunay studied art in Germany and France before settling in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. A bold, avant-garde artist, she didn’t limit her creativity to paintings – in her work, Dulaunay combined design, fashion, music and performance. Along with her second husband Robert Delaunay and Czech artist František Kupka, Dulaney co-founded the Orphism movement, an off-shoot of Cubism that emphasized pure abstraction and bright colors. The upcoming exhibition, ‘Sonia Delaunay: Color Rhythm,’ will feature the artist’s graphics, placards, letters and books. It will also exhibit works by artists and designers who follow Delaunay’s approach and worked at the intersections of multiple fields.

“Sonia Delaunay: Color Rhythm.” Set (14 Yaroslaviv Val St.) Nov. 15 – Dec. 15. Tue-Sun. 12 p.m. – 9 p.m. Free

 Akhnaten

The new production of Philip Glass’s opera “Akhnaten” that has just premiered at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera will be broadcast live at Kyiv’s Multiplex Lavina Mall cinema. Part of Glass’s “portrait” trilogy on historical visionaries like Einstein and Gandhi, “Akhnaten” tells the story of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh who is believed to have pioneered monotheism by abandoning polytheism. For this, the titular character played by the countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, gets overthrown, his monuments are dismantled and his name is erased from the king lists. Critics call the production “mystical,” “spellbinding” and “self-aware,” praising the cast, the director and the conductor of Glass’s 1983 minimalistic score.

Akhnaten. Multiplex (Lavina Mall, 6D Berkovetska St.) Nov. 23. 7:55 p.m. Hr 240-300

The film won the special UNICEF Award at the Venice Film Festival as one of the best films addressing children’s rights issues. The Polish drama “Boze Cialo” or “Corpus Christi” tells the story of a young man who wants to be a priest but is prevented from applying to the seminary because of a crime in his past. Two classics from the “Golden Fund” of Visegrád cinema, the 1996 “Kolya” and 2011 “Alois Nebel,” will also be screened on the last day of the festival.
