Closer Sixth Anniversary

Kyiv’s hottest electronic music club is celebrating its sixth birthday this week with two nights of parties and a vinyl record market. Ever since it opened in September 2013 in the rooms of a ribbon factory, Closer amassed dozens of resident DJs, some of whom will perform on the first night of celebrations on Oct. 18. The next day, Closer, as a cultural center, will hold the traditional vinyl records market, where DJs and music lovers can stock up on some records from Ukraine’s best vinyl shops and collectors. On the night of Oct. 19, the club will welcome the Berlin-based DJs Maayan Nidam and Thomas Melchior, with Closer’s resident Borys giving local support. The organizers are yet to announce the entrance prices.

‘The Lehman Trilogy’

Nine roles, three actors and the story of one of the most powerful families in the world. The three-act play “The Lehman Trilogy” portrays German-born brothers, Henry, Emanuel and Mayer, who rose to astonishing success after moving to the United States and founding a global financial services firm. Written by Italian Stefano Massini, the play was adapted by British Ben Power and staged by Sam Mendes, an English award-winning director known for the 1999 drama “American Beauty” and the James Bond films “Skyfall” and “Spectre.” Mendes’ take on the western capitalism received wide critical acclaim. The Guardian called the play “an acting masterclass” given by English actors Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles, who all play three family generations: Lehman brothers, their sons and grandsons. The play recording will be screened in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

The electronic music duo from Sweden will perform some of their psybient (mix of psychedelic and ambient music) hits in Kyiv’s Atlas concert hall. Carbon Based Lifeforms formed in 1996, out of the three piece group Bassment Studios and Notch, when the band’s members created some ambient, downtempo tracks instead of the electronic dance music. Since its foundation, Carbon Based Lifeforms dropped eight music albums and became world known for their psytrance melodies. In Kyiv, the duo will perform the songs from their latest album “Derelicts,” released in 2017.
