Former girl-band member Vera Brezhneva completes a charity project with her fund Luch Very

It’s more than common when an ex member of a girl’s (or boy’s) band embarks on a solo career, and in that respect Ukrainian group Via Gra was the most prolific – having changed its composition over five times, it gave Ukraine a number of new pop singers, and for better or worse, some of them had even gotten quite successful. Therefore it’s surprising and pleasing to see that at least one of the offspring of the pop-cabaret dedicated herself to a different cause. Vera Brezhneva, who left the band last summer after she got married, currently presides at the charitable fund Luch Very (Beam of Faith). Recently, it was announced that in the framework of the social children’s program “Give the World to a Child,” the fund collected about 2,500 books for the some of over Hr 50,000. The books will be given to children suffering from leukemia, and the residents of children’s homes. Initially they planned to pass the collected books to five orphanages, but the list was enlarged to 15 children’s homes and three hospitals.

The social program “Give the World to a Child” was held from Nov. 24 to Dec. 16, 2007 at the book chains Bukva, Empik, Book Supermarket and Litera, as well as Syayvo bookstore. The visitors to those stores were offered to buy a book, supply it with a dedicatory inscription and give it over to the representatives of the Luch Very fund.

The books will be presented on Saint Nicolas’ Eve to the orphanages of Vinnytska, Dnipropertovska, Donetska, Zhytomyrska, Zakarpatska, Kyivska, Lvivska and other regions, as well as three hospitals – Republican Children’s Hospital, Vinnytsya Children’s Clinical Hospital and Zhytomir Regional Children’s Hospital.

Vera Brezhneva initiated the creation of the fund this year, its aim being the help of children with oncological diseases and assistance in the harmonious development of children.

“Our charitable activity demonstrates that people are ready to sympathize with children deprived of parents’ care. I want to thank all who responded our call and took part in the program,” Vera Brezhneva remarked.
